The Above Photos were taken out of an airliner passenger plane, here you can see the grand canyon in Arizona.  Some say from the air the canyon looks like a shadow on the ground.
I have been over the Grand Canyon at  very high altitude when it did appear as a shadow on the ground.  in these photos Kim took  the canyon appears to me to look like a ditch.
in the bottom of the Grand Canyon is the Colorado River, which is also responsible for cutting the canyon.
